The Role of Virtual Consultations – a time for change

Covid-19 is a catalyst moment for primary care. On a scale never seen before, patients need remote clinical support. As a consequence, both patients and clinicians are becoming increasingly comfortable with remote consultations and enjoying the benefits they offer. It is therefore realistic to expect that this significant cultural change in accessing primary care is likely to persevere beyond the pandemic. HealthHero GPs benefit from the training, feedback and support to thrive during this time of change.

The role of our GPs is to provide clinical advice, reassurance and where appropriate, diagnosis and offer treatment options including prescriptions to patients by phone or video consultation. Following IMC best practice guidelines, our GPs consult with patients on an episodic basis across a broad spectrum of demographics and conditions from acute to chronic. Our top 5 clinical categories are dermatology, gastroenterology, ENT, MSK and urology.

Support

Our GPs all receive online training in remote consultations and all service offerings and are supported by our clinical governance board and 24/7 customer service and administration teams. Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr Chris Morris is on hand to support and guide GPs as necessary, with over 16 years training GPs, Chris is experienced and passionate about advancing effective patient care.

We provide:

  • An interview and onboarding process that enables the GP to feel knowledgeable, comfortable and ready to deliver the service
  • A 24/7 admin team and IT support team to answer any questions you have at any time.
  • The laptop with full one to one training and support until the GP feels ready to deliver the service.
  • Full support resources + best practice policies and procedures to guide the GP.
  • Onboarding pack to fully inform the GP.

Our requirements

  • GPs must be registered with the IMC and complete a Professional Competency Scheme/CPD with the ICGP or the ICSI (alternative equivalents may be considered)
  • Ideally the GP needs to be on the Specialist register
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a GP
  • Experience as a salaried or partnered GP in a surgery in the last two years is helpful
  • The GP commits to attending our bi-annual team meetings via video link
  • Complete the fully supported HealthHero Training programmes guided by our policies and procedures that reflect best practice
  • Engage and respond to quality audits as part of our commitment to good practice
  • 8 hours per week commitment minimum (2 x 4hour sessions per week)
  • A consistent and robust internet connection at home to be able to deliver the service (i.e. higher than 70 dBm and 25 Mbps or above and to be tested during any training)
  • A consistent and robust phone signal but GPs will be enabled to call patients through the internet
  • All calls are recorded for quality purposes
  • A Garda Vetting check
